PRUD'HOMME Linda

 : Print biography

Linda Prud’Homme was born in Montreal in 1947. She started oil painting on her own, 12 years ago, and later enrolled at the Visual Arts School and then at the Saïdye Bronfman Centre in order to perfect her techniques. She continued developing her technique under the watchful eye of Charlotte Rothenberg. Her recent distinctions include first prize in the Amateur Artist category, in the 1999 Expo Contest, for her work titled “Tenderness”. She was also a finalist for the 2000 and 2001 competition organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Her style is one of broad innovation and her most recent series, both her coloured and her monochrome paintings, closely resemble works of sculpture, due to the amount of texture she imparts to the surface of her canvas. In order to give even greater relief and depth to her work, Linda Prud’Homme uses salvaged marble residues obtained from a neighbouring sculptor. Another new feature of her work is her use of acrylic paint, which is a first for her after years of painting exclusively in oil.

With a profound appreciation of nature, she brings the vivid earth tones into all her paintings. One can best describe Linda’s work as mood paintings: encompassing a wide range of inner emotion and spiritual feeling.

Linda Prud’Homme has reserved preponderant space for women in her works. Her series include: “Les Femmes à la rose”, “Les Nues”, “Les Femmes aux bouteilles”, “Les Femmes et les animaux”, as well as a theme that focuses on the garden: “Les Femmes-fleurs”. The women in her paintings appear as symbols of strength and freedom. Even though they are portrayed figuratively, her female characters with their prominent noses and generous mouths and bodies reveal the artist’s subjectivity, which borders on the abstract. Linda Prud’Homme never paints without music, which she gracefully transposes to the canvas in rich and voluptuous tones and ambiance.
